Palo Alto, Calif. – May 16, 2011 – Mr. John Celli, president of Space Systems/Loral (SS/L), met with Barb Larson, the chief executive officer of the American Red Cross Silicon Valley Chapter, on Thursday, May 12, to present a donation check for relief efforts in Japan. SS/L's more than 3,000 employees gave generously to help survivors and aid in rebuilding the country's critical infrastructure following the magnitude 8.9 earthquake and subsequent tsunami on March 11. The company matched employee contributions up to $25,000 for a total of more than $61,000.
"The culture at SS/L is very compassionate," said Valerie Jünger, Vice President of Human Resources at SS/L. "This is a company where employees are committed to making a contribution to society. We do this through our jobs of building satellites that will function more than 22,000 miles above Earth's surface, but also through community and humanitarian programs whenever possible."
Communications satellites built at SS/L are used to deliver information and entertainment all over the world. Satellites can provide basic telecommunications services to remote regions, enabling new economic opportunities, and they are crucial for emergency services, distance learning and telemedicine. The company's North American customers include familiar satellite operators such as DIRECTV, DISH Network and SiriusXM Radio.
